Windows 8 and Surface get Tech Breakthrough 2012 award
Popular Mechanics included Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface tablet in its list of Top 10 Tech Breakthroughs of 2012. The service magazine annually publishes a list of top 10 product breakthroughs that matter the most to the people in general. It is known for publishing articles related to the latest science breakthroughs, technological advances, DIY projects, and tips and solutions to puzzling car problems.
The entry of Microsoft products in the list is considered as a good sign with just a few days left before the official release of Windows 8 on October 26. Although it’s still unclear whether Popular Mechanics got sufficient time to test these devices before releasing the list of awarded products of 2012.
What’s unique in Windows 8 and Surface
The Windows 8 operating system represents a radical change in the design from Windows 95 operating system. Its Modern User Interface (Modern UI) attempts to remove the differences between desktop PCs and touch screen-based tablets. The new operating system also gives users an option to either use the Modern UI or switch to an interface that uses conventional keyboard and mouse as input devices.
The unique thing about Microsoft Surface is its keyboard that doubles up as a protective cover. Also, the powerful Intel-based processor gives all the functionalities of a PC to this tablet.
